Амбициям Капры сослужили службу не только достоинства, но и недостатки режиссера. Нехватка дыхания, склонность к напыщенному ораторству; статичный стиль сухого и прямого обращения, лишенный поэзии и трепета, как нельзя выгоднее смотрятся в формате вольтеровской сказки. Как хороший адвокат, Капра мастерски использует финальные перипетии сюжета (сомнения Роналда Коулмена), чтобы окончательно утвердить свои тезисы в сознании зрителя.Ловишь себя на мысли, что Шангри-Ла стал бы идеальным сюжетом для Маккэри. Тот и сам построил собственный Шангри-Ла - более скромный, но и более доступный каждому, так как расположен он в самом сердце большого города, в тесном пространстве фильмов Иду своим путем, Going My Way и Колокола святой Марии, The Bells of St. Mary's. Сравнение между их картинами помогает лучше очертить личности обоих режиссеров. Капра создает притчу, адресованную более уму, нежели сердцу. Обстоятельный разгром этого фильма можно найти в книге Доналда Уиллиса «Фильмы Фрэнка Капры» (Donald С. Willis, The Films of Frank Capra, Scarecrow Press, New Jersey, 1974). Работа над сценарием и подготовка к съемкам вдохновили писателя и сценариста Питера Виртела (не указанного в титрах) на написание романа «Белый охотник, черное сердце» (Peter Viertel, White Hunter, Black Heart, 1953), по которому был снят одноименный фильм Клинта Иствуда (1990), исполнившего в нем главную роль. И роман, и фильм рисуют захватывающий и оттачивающий портрет Хьюстона и собирательный образ голливудского режиссера, пышущего здоровьем, эгоцентричного до жестокости и очень одаренного творчески. Действие и романа, и фильма обрывается перед самым началом съемок.
